The Magic in the Mini-Tent

The first part of this story was about the journey through the landscapes & Partys. This part is about what we created in the quiet moments in between: the wet plates born from our truly mobile darkroom.

For this trip, we had a secret weapon: a new, mini darkroom tent. It’s so compact I can set it up on a table in minutes. This was a revelation. My old darkroom was a bulky 3×3 meter „fishing“ tent—a logistical nightmare to pitch that utterly ruled out any spontaneity. This new setup? We could even load it onto a trolley and wheel it down a path to get the perfect shot. It is, without a doubt, the best portable darkroom solution I’ve ever had.

The plates that emerged from this little tent are some of our favourites. We are genuinely thrilled with them. Some have flaws, of course, and I’ve chosen not to retouch them extensively here; they are presented as they are. A photo can only give you an approximation—in reality, the depth of the tintypes black and the shimmering, silvery quality of the highlights are so much more captivating.

But above all, I’m grateful for our partnership. To be able to work so well together on the road is pure luxury. Trying to manage both the camera and the darkroom alone is simply too much work. Being able to split the roles—one on the camera, one in the tent—transforms the process from a frantic chore into an absolute joy. It makes all the difference.

Each plate tells two stories: the one of the subject, and the one of the mad, wonderful process it took to create it on the road.
