Analog Art Affair 2025 / Köln

Surprise Success at Premiere of Purely Analogue Photo Fair

On 29th November 2025, the BASE in Cologne transformed into the epicentre of analogue photography. The first-ever and intentionally purely analogue fair, ‚Analog Art Affair‘, proved to be an overwhelming success – the turnout exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.

The fact this event was pulled together in just five weeks of planning makes the enormous popularity all the more remarkable. Ben Hammer’s team booked the venue at short notice and rallied the analogue community – and it paid off.

Alongside well-known names like Ilford Photo, Silvergrain Classics, and specialist film dealers, it was independent photographers and small publishers who really defined the atmosphere. At numerous tables, you could find self-published magazines, fine-art prints, zines, and exquisite hand-printed photographs. The focus was clearly on community and direct exchange. This is where you meet the people behind the work.

Claus-Peter, Marius and I were there with our wet plate collodion setup. We erected a large darkroom tent, complete with flash system, water baths, and everything needed when you’ve previously loaded two cars to the roof – and we offered portraits on 8×10 inch plates (that’s 20×25 cm) and some 6×6 cm just for fun. Some really lovely photos were created, and visitors were thrilled.

The aisles were consistently busy with enthusiasts who weren’t just there to buy, but more importantly, to chat shop, network, and immerse themselves in the world beyond digital. What stood out was the pragmatic nature of the photography gear on show. Instead of high-priced collector’s items, robust 35mm point-and-shoots and well-used workhorses dominated – a clear sign the fair was attended primarily by active analogue photographers.

For camera collectors, however, the offerings could be expanded, as established dealers were largely absent. An idea for next year? Anyone wanting to part with cameras could perhaps get a table here – with the familiar risk, of course, of finding something new yourself.

The future of the ‚Analog Art Affair‘ is already secure: due to its great reception, the fair will take place on the first weekend of September in both 2026 and 2027. I will definitely be there again!

PS – As you can see in the photos, Marius‘ mum was there again, who by now is my absolute favourite mate at these events. The first bottle of fizz was cracked open at ten, and it certainly wasn’t the last. We had so much fun again – Gisela is simply the best.
