Farewell to Gretchen: An Impossible Love

Imagine you’re scrolling through Tinder, you fall for a profile picture, and immediately start plotting out the entire romance. This is the woman who will change your life, the one you want to keep forever. Nothing could tear you apart; together you would travel through France.

That’s roughly how a member of the Daguerre Club must have felt upon reading an article about a camera – the Raupp-Camera – let’s call her „Gretchen“. It was love at first sight. The man immediately wrote to the author of the article, filled with a powerful longing to buy this one specific camera. But he had to face the fact that Gretchen had already found new owners: us.

The story could have ended here. But Leppo – that was the admirer’s name – came to see us. His goal? To see the love of his life one more time, to hold her in his hands, and to have his photograph taken with her as a final farewell. It was one last, tearful rendezvous before he had to part with her for good.

You see, Gretchen lives with us now. She’s already been to England with us, seen and experienced so much. She is no longer prepared for an exclusive one-on-one relationship. We’ve opened up our relationship with her – Gretchen has become a part of us. Leppo accepted this and set off on his return journey to Bonn with a heavy heart.

So, a happy ending for us, and perhaps a sad one at first for Leppo. But he didn’t leave empty-handed: he found friends who are just as mad as he is. He has a beautiful portrait of himself, a print of it, and the certainty that he can always come back to visit Gretchen. He can visit her, have new photos taken with her – but he just can’t wholly possess her.

So it remains a love from afar. A longing that never fully fades. And in a way, that’s even a bit more romantic than Tinder.

PS: Naturally, all club members are always welcome here and can find exactly the same.
